“Mountain path—
sun rising
through plum scent.”
—poem by Matsuo Bashō translated by Lucien Stryk
After a long journey up a mountain, the first sign of a rising sun becomes a point of relief—a sanctuary of absolute stillness within the heart. It is also at this point that the light creates the longest shadow, slowly receding as the sun comes closer. The plum scent referenced in Bashō’s verse becomes a light and lightness of clarity.
