hexachordal space (imperfection)

graphite and pigment on canvas

Minamidera, a new building designed by Tadao Ando to accommodate the works of James Turtell, was a site I visited briefly after opening hours. The exterior of the site is mainly dark wood. With the design of the flat roof, this produced an even darker shadow—creating a spatial depth that visually extends into the building. In this painting, perfection is an illusion: all lines drawn individually embody various forms of imperfection accumulated. When lines unexpectedly curve, they are kept. Due to the natural fragility of this piece, all lines, in time, will fade into a shadow of the existing canvas. The piece is one of a series of work that does not have a fixed state of being.
