Painting Fluidity (yūgen I)2025

pigment and acrylic on linen
20 x 25 cm

Cold and warm rays of light penetrate through the atmosphere and give water its distinct tone of colour. The shadow cast by a single particle of water must then be cast again onto the particle right next to it. In a way, could we simultaneously imagine the thousands upon thousands of particles of falling water both reflecting light and casting its shadow upon one another within a millisecond? Could then the colour of water be described as the shadow of its molecules? In this painting, I layer a warm tone of light upon a cool tone of shadows. As the eye traverses, particles of warm beige gather into focus and, in the next moment, cool grey tones fill the canvas.
